Swamp Cooler: Portable Air Cooling for Less!
It's pretty amazing when you think about it, but for far less than the cost of a comparable portable air conditioning unit, you can buy and run a swamp (evaporative) cooler! They use much less energy to produce chillingly cold air (depending on your climate) and yet cost less to buy at the outset too. How can this be possible?
Swamp coolers don't have any of the internal machinery that air conditioners have to produce cold air. The only have a fan that forces air through a damp membrane which chills the air by evaporation. So it literally only needs enough power to run a fan, which you probably already know only uses the equivalent amount of electricity as a standard light bulb!
How Portable Air Conditioners Work
Air conditioners use a mechanical heat exchanger along with a special coolant gas (usually freon) to chill the air it pumps out, while simultaneously venting the hot exhaust air out through a pipe that needs to be vented to the outside. Incidentally, if you don't do that, you'll just get more hot air than cold with a net heating effect!
So they need a lot of energy to power that process, while being limited to where you can put them because they need to be close to an outside wall, window or vent shaft.
True Ventless Air Cooling
On the other hand, an amazing evaporative cooler produces no hot exhaust air, so it doesn't need to be vented to the outside. That means you can put them anywhere, move them around freely and not have to worry about the hassle of where to put an exhaust vent!
Important: Unlike AC, a swamp cooler needs a little cross ventilation in a closed room to stay effective. So opening a window a little and a door to create a cross draft is actually encouraged to prevent the humidity (moist air pumped out of the unit) in the room increasing to levels that would deteriorate the unit's effectiveness!
One more thing on economy: Because these machines only have a fan as their internal mechanism, they use far less energy. This is what makes them so very economical to run when compared to an air conditioner.
Are There Any Disadvantages?
Yes. There is one major drawback that if you live in an area with high humidity, an evaporative cooler is not so effective at producing cool air. That's because it cools by evaporation, meaning it evaporates cold moisture into the air to produce the chilled air effect.
If the air is already saturated with moisture, as with high humidity, the effect is reduced because the air can't much more moisture, so evaporation is not so effective. In areas of high humidity, the only effective cooling solution currently is a regular air conditioning unit.
But plenty of people live in areas that have dry heat (or humidity levels below a certain level - typically below 50-60%). In this case, a swamp cooler is highly effective. The lower the ambient humidity of the air, the more effective the cooling device is. In areas of low humidity (below 50%) a swamp cooler is capable of reducing the air temperature in a room by up to 30 degrees (Fahrenheit).
